Firebird & Texture of Time 2013

At the Irvine Barclay Theatre

Exotic, Colorful, Dramatic! This ballet is based on a Russian folk tale about a magical, glowing bird and a prince who enters an evil and magical world. The tale involves deception, trickery and heroism, as Prince Ivan and the Firebird join forces to break Kashchei’s evil spell over the Princesses.  The ballet concludes with a celebration of the new found freedom and the romance that developed throughout the story.

The Firebird was the first of Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes productions for which an original score was written for the dancers. This one-act ballet was choreographed by Michel Fokine in 1910, to music by Igor Stravinsky. This production of The Firebird was choreographed for Festival Ballet by Nikolai Kabaniaev in 2010, and we are happy to bring it back for your enjoyment!

Texture of Time – A World Premiere!
Original and thought-provoking, this contemporary ballet explores the visceral texture of time, as it changes and morphs from moment to moment. Audiences will enjoy a full- spectrum sensory experience, featuring the cutting-edge choreography of Josie Walsh.

The ballet is set to original music by Walsh’s composer husband, Jealous Angel, and includes special effects by Academy Award winner Jim Doyle. Using light and projections, the dancers magically transcend time and space. The collaboration creates an artistic fusion creating an unprecedented visual and auditory display.
This not-to-be-missed show is certain to be among the most innovative dance events of the season!
