Recital_1Ask any adult dancer, and they will tell you that June recitals bring back fabulous memories.  The excitement of performing on a real stage, the beauty of the costumes, a chance to wear stage make-up, performing to up-beat music and dancing for friends and relatives in the audience are hard to forget. Dancers enjoy the rehearsals, the photo sessions, and hanging back stage with their friends. These performances create life-long friendships and parents can score some great photos for home or office!

Our recital will feature a ballet, complete with scenery and props. This year, Southland Ballet Academy will present the enchanting tale of The Little Mermaid!  Ballet dancers in classes Pre-ballet II and above will perform in the various roles in this story.  Younger dancers, jazz and hip hop students will perform specially choreographed routines that their teachers have selected to showcase their skills.

Recital_2Although our annual recital is several months away, now is the time to plan for this exciting event!  Costumes have been ordered, and teachers are teaching dances in the specified recital classes. By now students should have paid for costumes and indicated desire to participate. During the next months, parents must be on the lookout for information that will come home with students. The recital packets will provide answers to all of your questions about tights and shoes, make-up, rehearsals, and schedules.

Recital_3Southland Ballet’s annual recital is scheduled for June 7 and 8 at the beautiful Irvine Barclay Theatre, so hold those dates.  Specifics days and times for each dancer will be announced later. The recital will be the first experience on stage for our littlest dancers, and many photo-ops become treasured memories in years to come. Parents and students can look forward to a wonderful day, where every dancer feels special.

I love watching the recitals—the smiling faces, the colorful costumes and the proud families remind me what dance is all about!
